Required Materials List

Materials for students
Students will need to bring:
Paints Oils. See below [ask for a recommendation: Ask your art shop assistant to recommend a good quality student range. Many cheap student-quality paints are difficult to work with, so go for a 'name'.***
Charcoal. Get a box of Willow Charcoal. Don't get compressed charcoal. You'll be doing a certain amount of drawing as part of your classes.
Canvas panels or other 'support' [for the still life sessions, please bring a 7"x 5" or 6"x 6" canvas panel, [For your convenience, Art Classes Ireland can provide panels at €2 each].
Brushes. See below.
Palette: A wooden mid-toned palette is best. Avoid white plastic.
Turps, Sansodor or mineral solvent
Table-top box easel: Useful for carrying your art materials to and from classes.
Rags. Cut up an old teeshirt!
***[Students who have a problem with solvents can buy water-miscible oils such as Windsor & Newton's Artisan or Royal Talens' 'H20' range. No solvents are necessary].

Bring no more than three brushes. Flats or filiberts of gauges 12 and 6 and a detailing brush, perhaps a ’round’ No.3 or No.4. Buy good hog bristle or synthetic brushes. Don’t go for cheap brushes. They won’t perform properly and will certainly end up frustrating your efforts! Good brushes aren’t cheap, so remember to wash them out thoroughly after each painting session with soap and water. Materials care will be part of the course.
Shapes of brushes:
Round: an elongated cone
Flat: squared off end, like a chisel
Bright: squared off, flat, shorter bristles than a ‘flat’ brush
Filbert: like a flat but with rounded corners on the tip
